Primary Care Services

The Health Services staff serve as a primary care resource for SJC students. Primary care services provided at the SHWC include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of minor acute illnesses and injuries
  • Monitoring of chronic illnesses under the direction of your physician
  • Immunizations
  • Women’s health
  • Tuberculosis screenings
  • Routine physical examinations
  • Sexually transmitted infection (STI) screenings
  • Limited concussion care
  • Nicotine cessation
  • If a medical specialist is needed, Health Services providers will recommend and connect students to the appropriate local resources.

When you reach out for an appointment, you will be asked the nature of your visit to best ensure ample time and quality care. We offer several different types of appointments depending on the specific services required:

    • Same-day appointments are reserved for urgent medical problems and acute illnesses.
    • Scheduled appointments and telehealth appointments are available for non-urgent medical problems.
    • Physical exams. Bring any necessary forms or paperwork you need filled out on the day of the visit. If any areas on the form are to be completed by you, including your name and address, be sure to complete those portions prior to the visit. As some forms can be extensive, if forms are not completed prior to the appointment there is a risk the appointment will need to be rescheduled.
    • Well Woman Exams. For a Pap smear or GYN exam, avoid intercourse, douching, or vaginal creams for 24–48 hours prior to your appointment.
    • Sexually transmitted infection (STI) screenings. STI screening appointments are arranged during the morning hours. It is important that you do NOT urinate for at least two hours before your appointment. There is no need to fast for these appointments. Please inform the front desk if you are having symptoms so we can best serve your needs.
    • Tobacco cessation appointments. Students who are seeking to quit nicotine products are encouraged to reach out to the tobacco cessation specialist on staff, who can guide you through the process.
